1898 Singer Sewing Machine Treadle Model 27
I have an 1898 Singer treadle style Sewing Machine Model 27 Vibrating Shuttle number 2. It is the type with an extension that folds out and the machine is stored inside the base. I also have the little wooden box with all of the attachments, the foot and the thing that measures the seam allowance, two bobbins and a small Singer envelope with three needles. There are also two instruction manuals. One original and one 1899 reprint. They are both missing pages and most of the pages are tattered and torn. The original is missing the cover. The wood top of the sewing machine needs refinishing but overall its in great condition. I have been trying to find out how much its worth, but all of the ones that I can find for sale don't say whether or not they have the accessories that mine has. Some are in worse condition others are refinished and most are different years. So I have no idea. If anyone knows please let me know.

I also inherited a 1898 Model 27 Treadle Sewing Macine that looks exactly like yours (Serial 15,776,968) and in simliar condition. I would greatly apreciate knowing if you determined the value of your machine.

That's not true Lovejoy. Yes alot were made. But most of them were destroyed or not in very good condition. You can go to this website:

and look for the model number. But I would suggest going to a professional appraiser before selling it to any one! It might be worth more than you think. Because there's so many different models, my family has one from 1910, and the stand it's built into is very different than most. Usually they only have 5 drawer stands, but ours has 7 and has a very ornate design. But like I said,...check into first before you do anything. I hope it's not too late.

I am researching the same sewing machine. You mentioned going to the singer website. The thing is there is no letter prefix, so there is not a number made. Our cabinet has 3 drawers on each side and we have 2 orginal boxes with tools and the manual. If you have any suggestions for us, I would really appreciate it.

Hi.. Im attempting to find out the value of my machine also. I was told by singer that no prefix means it was pre 1900. Mine is a 1895 model with a serial number and no prefix. I found this info doing a google search "singer serial number"

You are correct, Singer did not use a letter prefix for the serial numbers prior to 1900. The model 27's were made in the millions, of the records that remain over 330,000 of them were made in 1904 and 260,000 in 1905, and over 300,000 in 1908. They were made right into 1910. For this reason values for them are modest, most of the treadle machines sell for under $150.00 at auction. Many people sell the accessories separately for a higher return.

The model 127 is an update of Singers 1887 Vibrating shuttle "Model V.S. 2" in 1887. The V.S 2 was re-designated as the "model 27" about 1900. Singer did not use a letter prefix for the serial numbers prior to 1900. The model 27's were made in the millions, of the records that remain over 330,000 of them were made in 1904 and 260,000 in 1905, and over 300,000 in 1908. They were made right into 1910.

As I said before the model 127 is an update of Singers 1887 Vibrating shuttle "Model V.S. 2" in 1887. The V.S 2 was re-designated as the "model 27" about 1900. If yours dates to 1886, technically it would not be a model 27.

I agree with Lovejoy. I bought mine at an antique mall for less than $100, in great condition. I don't know if it is the same model, but they look alike in the photos.

Thhe Vibrating Shuttle #2 (pre 1900 Model 27) does not have a bobbin like the newer machines, Rather it has a funny quartz shaped looking one. I thought the same thing when I got my machines (2 of them) today. I have parts now for the Singer 1889 treadle 4 drawer with Coffin top, and the Singer 1899 6 drawer Treadle with folding top. The 1889 VS#2 machine has a curved base and hand painted flowers, The 1899 VS#2 has the flying Pegasus with a lot of wear. If you need parts, just e mail me at zeppo1207@yahoo.com. Thanks!
